My Top 5 Shea Moisture Hair Masques

Long time no see! So 2022 wasn’t one of my greatest years which about nearly sent my motivation to write straight down the toilet. I’m most active these days on TikTok (which can be found in my Linktree) between rants about politics, obsessing about Kingdom Hearts, and even delving into some cosplay. But I’m hoping to get back in the swing of things hear after much work on my mental health and finally getting a new laptop (thank you Mama) that I won’t fear will implode.

Without further ado, let’s dive right in!

So I’ve been on a curly hair routine for almost five years, and I have my go-to products locked and loaded. Maybe I’ll impulse purchase once in a while, but definitely not as often as when I started out. Some of my products shift depending on my hair day and the ever-changing seasons. But the most consistent item in my shower is Shea Moisture’s hair masques.

Across the board, all the masks have thick consistencies with all the moisture my hair needs on wash day without suffocating my strands. Yet each mask has its own set of unique ingredients which can make or break the final results. So I’m gonna break down my absolute favorites.

Here are my Top 5 Shea Moisture Hair Masques!

Hair Care Reviews: Not Your Mother’s Sicilian Blood Orange & Black Currant Butter Masque

I’ve been quiet on the hair care front for a while since my curls were happy and healthy for the longest time. I still have a hell of a stash to wade through, and I just wasn’t itching to experiment. But between false spring after false spring and wearing masks through the shelter-in-place order, my hair began suffering. Now I can live with a smooshed curl pattern from wearing masks; that’s a first world problem. But dry ends which could start a California wildfire? Not so much. I even tried co-washing for the first time in a while and that didn’t do jack shit for me.

Of the few impulse purchases I made in the last month, I needed to restock on the Not Your Mother’s Curl Detangler, and they had a buy one get one half-off deal. Plus I wanted free shipping and to be able to use another coupon, so I added on one of their masks which is the subject of today’s review: Not Your Mother’s Sicilian Blood Orange & Black Currant Butter Masque. I know, their product names really roll of the tongue.

While some of Not Your Mother’s older lines have sulfates and silicons, the brand constantly pushes their Naturals lines where the ingredients are 98% naturally derived. No sulfates, silicons, parabens, or any nasties you don’t need! This particular Butter Masque is designed to nourish dry and frizzy hair with a delicious blend of extracts and oils for soft, silky smooth locks. Of course, the major highlights are the orange extract and black currant seed oil which are both excellent ingredients to combat hair loss with Vitamin C. It also has rosemary extract and sunflower seed oil to aid in hair growth and shine.

Citrus is one of those scents which can be easily overwhelming for me. There’s definitely times I’ve been in Lush, picked up a citrus-scented product, and felt like I snorted a whole container of Tang. Thankfully, this masque not only has a pleasant scent, but every time I smell it, it makes my mouth water like I’m actually eating the fruits. I love products which can trigger the senses so deliciously like that.

Now, the mask says it can be used up to 3 times a week, but that’s overkill. There is such a thing as over-moisturizing your hair, and you don’t want to smother it; once a week is plenty for a deep condition. True to its name, the masque’s consistency is very buttery, and it easily smooths over your hair after conditioning. I never tested a Not Your Mother’s masque, so for my first test, I ended up using about 3 palmfuls of product to coat my hair. I left it in for about 20 minutes under a deep conditioning cap, and I realized I used a bit too much as it didn’t all absorb into my hair.

So I only used about 2 palmfuls for the next test, and I got similar results. A little product definitely goes a long way to moisturize for the week, and it left my hair super soft once it dried. I recommend if you want this masque to last and take advantage of the benefits, supplement it with a good conditioner or leave-in. While soft hair is awesome, the only downside is that it may be more difficult to hold a strong curl pattern.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Although my curls were more wavy, I was so happy to not have that dry hay feeling anymore. It was already so much easier to manager during the week on my refresher days, and I thankfully didn’t need to overdo it to keep the softness. I’ll have to cocktail with some of my other products to find a combo which will keep the curls, especially with the erratic weather changes. If none of your normal products seem to be working like they usually do, change up something in your routine, like this masque. You might be surprised on how instantly happy your hair will get with some change.

Hair Care Reviews: Yes To Grapefruit Vitamin C Brightening Hair Clay Mask

I’m out of town again which means travel sized hair routine which also means another hair care review! In one of my last posts, I mentioned I stocked up on a few hair masks from Yes To to keep on standby for travel in the near future. And the holidays seemed like the perfect time to use them. Last month, I used the Tea Tree Scalp Relief Soothing Hair Clay Mask as a pre-poo treatment with mixed results. It did well to detangle the worst of my knots and give some moisture, but I didn’t have enough product to get the much needed scalp relief. And because I made the dumb-dumb decision to not do a proper deep condition that weekend when I was in the bitterly cold Midwest, my hair fucking suffered. Lesson learned: never skip deep conditioning.

So for today’s Grapefruit Vitamin C Brightening Hair Clay Mask, I used it as a proper deep conditioner. As the product’s name indicates, its focal point is the grapefruit which is chock full of antioxidants, particularly Vitamin C, to keep your hair shiny and fresh. And for some extra boosts of moisture, the mask also contains aloe leaf juice, soybean oil, avocado oil, and castor oil. I forgot to mention scent in my last review, and thankfully these masks are very light on fragrance. This one has nice citrus-y hints to remind you of the grapefruit.

I applied this mask after shampooing and conditioning, and it’s much easier to work through wet hair and the leftover tangles. I didn’t feel any hardening that I got with the first mask I tried last month. My hair sucked the product right in. As with the previous mask, you can apply to your roots, but honestly, my ends and tips needed the moisture far more since I was pushing 8 days without a full wash. Since I only had so much product to work with, I left it in for 10 minutes.

After rinsing and styling, here are the day one results!

Yes, that is a Star Wars shirt, cause I saw Rise of Skywalker that day (yes, there will be a review in the near future).

I’m usually not too concerned with shine since my hair is naturally dry from the get-go, but the first day delivered well on shiny locks. And DevaCurl does wonders to lock in a good wavy curl pattern. However, I was long overdue for a trim, as you can see from the scraggly ends, so even after wash day, my hair still felt weighed down.

Thankfully, my momma was there to give me a quick haircut on day 2, and you can see the results below.

img_1629

The trim gave my hair much needed relief to make it light and fluffy. It’s already much easier to manage and detangle in between wash days without overdoing leave-in conditioner. Although the shine didn’t last too long for me, what matters most is that my hair isn’t dried out by the middle of the week. And it’s reassuring to know Yes To’s clay masks work as well as a deep condition like a pre-poo treatment. It may not be as moisturizing as say my Shea Moisture hair masks at home, but thankfully styling picks up the slack without making me too greasy.

I got one more mask on standby from Yes To to test, and I can’t wait to share my thoughts soon!

Hair Care Reviews: Yes To Tea Tree Scalp Relief Soothing Hair Clay Mask

Since I traveled for Thanksgiving, it was the perfect time to try out a travel size mask for the first time in a while. And I’ve been eyeballing this brand every now and then whenever I popped into CVS or Target, so giving into temptation was inevitable.

Yes To is a beauty brand which specializes in fruits and vegetables as their main natural ingredients. Their mission is to bring “all of the goodies” without any harsh ingredients with 95% natural and recyclable formulas. Their major selling point is their facial care which is most common in any retail or drug store. Their hair lines aren’t the most massive, but there’d a few neat things I find from time to time in stores like their single use clay hair masks. I picked up a few since I knew I’d be traveling for the holidays, and today I’ll be featuring the Tea Tree Scalp Relief Soothing hair mask.

Today’s mask, as the name indicates, is designed to soothe itchy scalps, which really dragged me in, cause my scalp as of late feels like a nightmare. Its main highlight is the tea tree and sage oils which combat dandruff, strengthen hair, and provide much needed moisture to your scalp. The mask also contains aloe leaf juice, soybean oil, and avocado oil for an extra boost of moisture. But how does it perform?

For this particular wash day, I sadly didn’t have time to do a usual deep condition. But the packaging says it can be used before shampooing for 3-5 minutes, so I took the leap of faith to save time. I never used a clay mask, so it was an odd texture to get used to; it almost felt like it began hardening. But thankfully as I kept working through my tangles, my ends sucked up the product. The instructions also say you can apply the mask to the roots, which you usually don’t need to do. However, because I have stinking long hair, once I finished working through the ends, I barely had any leftover to apply to my scalp. But whatever I could apply on my scalp was instant relief I needed for quite a while. It was super cooling and refreshing.

I left the mask in for 5 minutes while I did the rest of my morning routine, and then hopped right in the shower to wash my hair and what-have-you. And here are the day one results when 100 percent dry, and… I’m really regretting skipping the deep condition.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting wash day to last long since at the time I was in the Midwest for the weekend, and it’s far more bitterly cold and windy than I’m used to. I picked up the slack as best as I could in styling with DevaCurl, and I thankfully got some definition to stick. But this look lasted maybe 2 days at max before getting frizzy and knotted. As of this writing, I’m fairly certain my scalp is mad at me for the extreme weather changes cause it feels like someone dumped a whole cup of melted butter on my head. Never a pleasant feeling.

I’m not gonna give up on Yes To just yet since I already got two more masks to try, and there’s more than one way to use this product. I’m hoping using one of the mask as a proper deep condition will fare me better. But as a pre-poo treatment, the Tea Tree Scalp Relief Soothing mask breezes right through my tangles, and true to its name, it provides much need moisture to a dry scalp. I just wish there was more product to get through my scalp, and I learned my lesson to never skip a deep condition ever again, even if my sleep schedule disagrees with me.

Hair Care Reviews: Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Oil Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque

So the last mask I reviewed really didn’t do me any favors in the long run for the week. My curl pattern didn’t last and no mater how many times I touched up and refreshed my hair, it was still a frizzy mess and dryer than a California hillside before a wildfire starts. Another one of those Cousin It-Kuriboh crossover weeks…

Again, too lazy for Photoshop. Just use your imagination.

So I ended up slapping all my hair into a braid before giving into the impulsive thoughts to chop it all off. I definitely needed a miracle to set everything right, and there’s never a wrong time to experiment and switch up your routine!

So for this wash day, I finally, finally tried out Shea Moisture’s Jamaican Black Castor Strengthen & Restore Treatment Masque! Lord, that is a mouthful…

I kept putting this Shea Moisture line off for so long cause when I first smelled a couple of the products, it reminded me too much of medicine. I kept specifically thinking back to when I was bedridden after my tonsillectomy and had to keep drinking this disgusting liquid antibiotic while recovering. And I, at the ripe age of 11-years-old mind you, was being a whiny brat about taking my medicine to the point where my mom swapped out the liquids for pills she could crush and put in my chocolate pudding (Mom, if you’re reading this, I apologize of all things your daughter had to be picky on, it was medicine).

Anyway!

While the smell threw me off at first, it turns out that the Jamaican Black Castor Oil line is one of Shea Moisture’s most popular among curly heads, especially for type 4 hair. And some folks actually like the scent, so maybe it was something I’d eventually come around to love. I gotta say I at least tried it once.

As with all Shea Moisture masques, this one starts with coconut oil and shea butter. It also contains avocado oil, mango seed butter, olive oil, peppermint extract, hydrolyzed keratin, vinegar, aloe leaf juice, caramel, and, of course, castor oil. And that’s just a brief overview of the main highlighted ingredients; there’s a ton of oils in this one. This masque is designed for those who regularly dye and/or heat style their hair, so it’s packed of nutrient-rich ingredients to moisturize and strengthen. And it was the perfect fit for wash day given how much my hair felt like hay.

I heard a couple other YouTubers compare the scent to chocolate or Play-Doh, and upon revisiting the scent after a while, that combination is right on the nose. The caramel gives the masque its sweet quality, and after a few whiffs, I picked up on the chocolate-like scent. As for the Play-Doh scent, I’m not sure where the heck that’s coming from, but it’s a pleasant smell once I got past the initial thoughts of medicine. As per usual of Shea Moisture, the consistency is super thick; just perfect for a deep condition. It evenly coats throughout the hair with just enough excess for some extra moisture.

Then, it’s 30 minutes in a heated cap, rinsed out, styled and air-dried, and below are the results!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

The look and the feel of my curls were significantly better than the dry hay feeling from the previous week. It still got frizzy after a couple days, which is to be expected given the heat and fall weather can’t come fast enough, but it didn’t dry out. The curl pattern and moisture stuck through most of the week, and just detangling spray was enough to refresh through the week; I didn’t even need to throw it into a protective style in the last couple days.

It’s another win for Shea Moisture! I’m glad I got past the first impressions of the scent to see the amazing benefits and results, and now I definitely see why this particular line is a favorite for curly heads. If you’re struggling to retain moisture, especially if you regularly use chemicals and heat on your hair, put this on your shopping list, stat!

Hair Care Reviews: Hask’s Orchid & White Truffle Moisture Rich Deep Conditioner

It’s been a while since I talked about hair care. I’m finally at a point in my curly hair journey when I can gauge what does and doesn’t work for my hair through the year, so I’m not experimenting as much as I used to. But I still have a few items which have been sitting in my closet for far too long, and I need to go through the old before justifying buying anything new.

After some input, I decided to give Hask a go with their Orchid & White Truffle Moisture Rich Deep Conditioner! I was mainly drawn to the packaging cause I’m a sucker for purple, and these are such appealing colors. As the name indicates, this deep conditioner contains orchid extract and white truffle extract which aim to rehydrate and nourish your hair. It also contains hydrolyzed pea protein and hydrolyzed collagen to strengthen the strands. However, if you’re super strict on following the Curly Girl Method, there is also isopropyl alcohol (even though the packaging says it’s free of drying alcohol, like, c’mon y’all).

Hask is one of those hit-and-miss brands where you don’t know if it’s curly hair friendly until you read the back, and isopropyl alcohol commonly shows up in some of their products, even though it’s usually towards the bottom of the list– also, their website doesn’t show the ingredient, so I don’t know for sure if their formula updated since I bought this. In my experience, I haven’t noticed too much drying, so long as my leave-ins and stylers supplement on moisture, but if it’s an ingredient you’re avoiding like the plague, be wary.

As with most Hask deep conditioners, the consistency is thick and creamy; just perfect to coat your hair. I’ve been using Shea Moisture deep conditioners for a while and by comparison, my hair soaks in Hask almost immediately upon applying the product. I was also struggling a bit on detangling, and this deep conditioner does well to pick up the slack on the more troublesome knots. This also has a mild floral, but kinda perfume-y scent to it which lingers for a bit after rinsing out. It’s not the most overwhelming scent ever, but it definitely has a noticeable perfume-like quality to it, even though fragrance is one of the last ingredients.

After I finished my routine and let my hair air dry, I got a hell of a great curl pattern, decent volume, and very minimal frizz. These were the best curls I had in a while this entire summer. However, even with all the leave-in and gel I used, the look only held for about a day. And I’m kicking myself on forgetting to take a photo cause my Day 1 hair looked so great!

So for the results, I just have the Day 2 hair:

There’s still some curl pattern, but it’s more wavy, which is common for my hair throughout the summer given the shifting heat. A few sections dried out and tangled, and my roots when flat, but thankfully a bit of detangling spray rejuvenates well for the morning. However, it didn’t really withstand the wind and heat when I went out to volunteer (which includes taking public transportation and walking). I had to quickly spritz cold water in my hair when I got home cause my scalp felt so damp with sweat. Never a great feeling.

I think this deep conditioner would’ve worked a lot better if I wasn’t subject to the harsh elements, and I may need a different cocktail of products to replicate my Day 1 results and actually make them last. I probably won’t grab this in the near future until the summer heat calms the fuck down. But if you’re not as prone to dryness or tangles, it’s worth giving a try at least once and see what results you get.

Hair Care Reviews: Amika Curl Corps

So my sister’s Instagram, marina.dove, is so popping with make-up and skincare that every now and then she’ll get PR. Recently, she received a massive box from a company called Amika with tons of hair care products. Among those items, she received two under the line Curl Corps, a Defining Cream and an Enhancing Gel. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have curly hair, so these won’t do much for her. That’s why she’s got me to pass these on to and test out!

Before moving on, please be sure to click the above link to my sister’s Instagram for her thoughts on the rest of Amika’s products and other spectacular items, and give her a follow! Your support means a lot!

Amika is a sulfate-free, cruelty-free, and vegetarian-friendly brand which creates professional hair care products and tools with individuality in mind. Delivered in some fun and cute packaging, Amika has a massive variety of shampoos, conditioners, stylers, and more to promote self-expression over conformity. Every single one of their products contains sea buckthorn berry which is chock-full of essential vitamins and nutrients to moisturize the strands, prevent hair loss, give a healthy shine, and promote the production of collagen.

Unfortunately, some of their products here and there contain silicons, so you really have to be sure to read the ingredients before buying if you’re still aiming to avoid silicons. Another one to watch out for is fragrance. I’m usually indifferent to it since I try to buy products with more subdued scents, but I, for the life of me, cannot tell if the fragrance here is natural or not. The first whiff always feels like I snorted the entire Macy’s perfume department. Although the fragrance doesn’t linger after you put the products in, the scents are still super powerful at first, and for some, that just may not be your cup of tea.

Thankfully, Curl Corps is at least silicone-free, so it’s still safe on that front. You can find these two products online only either on Amika’s official website (loveamika.com) or Sephora.com. The Defining Cream contains tapioca starch, oat peptide, hydrolyzed jojoba protein, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and hydrolyzed wheat starch. The Enhancing Gel contains oat peptide, soybean protein, hydrolyzed wheat protein, and PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil. Both products have incredibly light consistencies and spread pretty damn far. The Cream’s texture is identical to Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie, and the Gel is kinda watery, almost like a lubricant (which by no means is a bad thing; it’s just lighter than I’m used to with most gels).

A little goes a long way, so you definitely get your money’s worth. And don’t let the light consistencies fool you, cause the hold for the first three days is quite strong. That’s the beauty of the castor oil, starches and proteins. However, those are the kind of ingredients which your hair will either love or hate. For some hair types, it may be too much moisturizing, and it will result in frizz. Since my hair is in that weird midway of wavy and curly, it’s often a roll of the dice in what it likes at any given week.

The first week test was good at holding curls for about three days before it became troublesome. But thankfully, detangling spray gave an easy fix to preserve the curls a little longer. Week 2, however, was a freaking nightmare of frizz which just wouldn’t go away, and my hair was weighed down and grimy to the touch. I even co-washed, and nothing would alleviate that gross feeling. But thankfully on Week 3, everything bounced back to normal. The hold wasn’t as strong as the first week test, no thanks to windy summer days, but again, some detangling spray brought the curls back to life. And below are the week 3 results!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Maybe not the absolute best results, but Curls Corps gets the job done for wavy curls. I noticed you have to be extra cautious with the products in the rest of your routine, so if your usual go-tos are heavy oils and conditioners, you might wanna switch it up when testing Curl Corps. This also won’t be a good time to half-ass shampooing, so definitely make sure your scalp is 100 percent clean of any product build-up from your last wash day.

I think these would work better for me in the fall and winter when my hair is more dry and not oily and sweaty like it is every other week now. I’m not ready to give up on these bad boys, so I’ll test out a few different cocktails in the near future to find the right combination of products to agree with Curl Corps. I hope to find more curly hair friendly products from this brand just in case I have the need to splurge in the near future. And if you have the extra money to throw down for a new cream and gel, then let Amika give you the fix your hair needs.

5 Things to Know Before Starting Your Curly Hair Journey

So I’ve been on a curly hair routine for a year now, and I couldn’t be happier with how much healthier my hair is. Not that I had a crap ton of damage to recover from, but I can’t imagine ever going back to how I used to take care of my hair. Some weeks are rougher than others with all the experimentation I do, but I finally nailed down on what works and what doesn’t for the best results.

Now anyone who begins a curly hair routine knows some of the basics: don’t wash your hair every freaking day, avoid sulfates and silicons, don’t brush your hair dry, et cetera, et cetera. Since going on a curly hair routine, I learned a few other things I wish I knew when I began. These are little topics I may see brought up time-to-time from social media influencers, but they’re not as widespread talking points. And of course, I had to make it into a list.

Here are 5 Things to Know Before Starting Your Curly Hair Journey!

How to Protect Your Curls for Swimming

It’s summertime which means unbearable heat and wanting to go for a swim nearly every day. There’s just one teeny tiny little problem: what the fuck do you do with your curly hair? It’s easier said than done to just put your hair up in a high bun and not go too deep in the water. But high possibility says you’re gonna be splashed by folks anyway, intentional or not, and if you don’t just dunk your face in the water right now, you’ll feel like collapsing from heat exhaustion sooner than later.

This dilemma dawned on me in the weeks leading up to a long weekend at my parents’ place, and I knew I couldn’t pass up a chance to swim. So I did some quick research, and thankfully the solution was easier than I thought. Here’s how to prepare your hair in 3 steps:

  1. Pop into the shower and get your hair damp;
  2. Apply a crap ton of conditioner, root to tip;
  3. Put your hair in a protective style like a bun or a braid.

    img_1153
Soaking in the SoCal Vitamin D

And then you’re ready to jump into the water without mucking up your hair too much! For this first test, I used the papaya Garnier Fructis One-Minute Mask since it does well to coat my hair without any tremendous weight, and the travel size goes a long way for such a task. Plus it’s cheap enough that I don’t feel guilty about using quite a bit. You can also use coconut oil if you just can’t bear to sacrifice that much conditioner. Also make sure your hairstyle is tight enough that it doesn’t come too loose while swimming, but obviously, don’t put too much tension on your scalp.

And of course, make sure you still rinse out your hair afterwards to get out chlorine, saltwater, or excess conditioner/oil. I recommend using a low/no-lather shampoo or a co-wash (like DevaCurl’s Conditioning Cleanser) to be absolutely certain for a clean scalp without stripping sebum, especially if your wash day was fairly recent. You can also add in a leave-in or styler to bring back curl definition, but it’s totally up to you. I went ahead with a little bit of both Shea Moisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie and DevaCurl’s Light Defining Gel. And below is my look after swimming!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I just had a full wash the day before, so I probably should’ve better planned around that. But thankfully my hair didn’t suffer too much. I actually got more curl definition than I did with my full wash (which you can see with my most recent hair care review), and my hair was super, super soft and fluffy. For this, you gotta make sure you put enough styler in to make sure the curls last until your next wash day. But I’m glad I gave this method a try with fantastic results in protection. I’ll definitely be on the lookout for my next chance to swim and adjust this method and see what results I get.

Managing Your Hair Care Stash

Spring has sprung which means it’s time to clean up the clutters of winter; out with the old and in with the new!

Now it’s pretty common for those trying most, if not all, of the Curly Girl Method to accumulate a lot of products. Shampoos, conditioners, leave-ins, gels, the works. Starting a curly hair routine takes a ton experimentation, trial and error, and constant shifting on product use depending on hair type, weather and one’s weekly activities. There’s a lot of great brands out there, and we can’t help but want to try them all out, especially when they get good reviews from our trusted social media influencers. So, as you do, this is where a good chunk of my paychecks went over the course of about 10 months…

img_0922

And yes, that is a panorama.

Granted, I haven’t gotten to the point where I have whole shelves dedicated to hair products, but this is more than I ever owned in my whole life. And since I’m not nearly well-known enough to get PR, it’s mainly coming out of my own pocket with a few gifted items here and there, so it’s quite the investment on my end. Oh, the things I do to take care of my hair…

I organized the above photo by brand, so let’s go through each one-by-one, left to right:

  • Not Your Mother’s
    • I haven’t tried much from Not Your Mother’s, but I like seeing them constantly promote their Naturals lines which are sulfate, silicone and paraben free. The Tahitian Gardenia Flower & Mango Butter line is specifically designed for curly hair, and the detangling spray is the absolute best to maintain curls in between washes. I cut back on leave-ins since I was overdoing them which weighed my hair down over time. Turns out the detangler alone is just enough to keep my curl definition and get out the knots. It kind smells like medicine with a touch of floral extract (at least to me anyway), but I don’t mind since it gets the job done so well. I’m really itching to try more of this brand, especially the hair masques I see all over Instagram, and I have nothing but the best hopes.
  • Curls
    • While one of the pricier brands on drug store shelves, you definitely get your money’s worth. Curls is wonderful when you’re just starting on a curly hair routine and looking for more light products to moisturize and hold your curl definition. And the Blueberry Bliss line smells so much like candy you could eat it. Admittedly, I don’t use the gel and leave-in as much as I used to since I prefer a stronger hold, but I still go back to them occasionally depending on what I’m feeling for wash day. I’ll need to go out of my way to another store to try out more products cause my nearby CVS doesn’t have the best variety.img_0923
  • Lush
    • I don’t use Lush hair care products that often since it’s so expensive, and most everything contains sulfates, including the conditioners which is still weird to me. But the shampoo bar is convenient for travel and those days where I feel greasier than I should. R&B is still one of the best leave-in conditioners I ever tried, and I definitely recommend it if you can throw down the extra money. I’m still curious about a couple treatments, and need to do more research before making a commitment.
  • Maui Moisture
    • This is hands down one of the best drug store brands for curly hair. I have absolutely no complaints since everything works like a charm. The shampoo is super cleansing without drying out my hair, the conditioner is perfect for detangling, and the multiple treatments and stylers are wonderful at moisturizing when all else fails. And everything smells so fucking delicious. It’s becoming more of a struggle to not buy the Hibiscus Water line cause that watermelon scent is to die for.
  • Shea Moisture
    • Like much needs to be said for Shea Moisture? It’s another great go-to brand for curly hair which caters to all hair types. Got a lot of heat and/or chemical damage? There’s a line for that. Got low porosity? There’s a line for that too! Prone to shrinkage? Oh, you know the answer! Because some lines are for very specialized hair needs, some products may just not work for you, even if others swear by them. So far the only dud for me has been the Peace Rose Oil Complex line as both the shampoo and conditioner are far too runny, and it feels like I have to use a lot to get decent results, which sucks cause rose is one of my favorite scents. But you’re always guaranteed to find at least one or two Shea Moisture lines which suit your needs.img_0924
  • Garnier Fructis
    • Over the past couple years, Garnier Fructis actually really impressed the curly hair community by slowly introducing more silicone and sulfate-free products. Their One Minute Masks became the biggest highlight with an amazing 3-in-1 product to detangle and moisturize. The avocado one served me so well that I went ahead and bought the larger size. I have yet to try that gel in the back, and I know it has one silicone, but it is thankfully water soluble, so I’m hoping for the best.
  • Idhayam brand sesame seed oil
    • Yes, I still have my trusty sesame seed oil after all this time. I only need about a tablespoon to saturate and detangle my hair, and it was a hell of a game changer for my routine. I’ve been meaning to test out other oils, but I also like the routine I currently have going on. Though since the summer heat is around the corner, a change in routine is probably in my near future.
  • OGX
    • So I had to branch away from OGX for a while after finding out their oil mists had silicons (oops). While the brand is sulfate-free, most of their products have a crap ton of silicons, which sucks cause they really don’t need them. Thankfully, I found at least one item that’s silicone-free and smells amaze-balls, and you’ll definitely see a review coming soon.img_0925
  • Deva Curl
    • Ah yes, the Holy Grail of curly hair care. I only really use these if I’m in desperate need of a miracle, and I like to keep some travel-sized products on standby just in case. The styling gel is my absolute favorite, and I have a larger size of the One Condition waiting in my Ulta shopping cart. It definitely doesn’t hurt to be a bit self-indulgent with a brand like Deva Curl, especially if there’s one or two products which do wonders for your hair.
  • Hask
    • I only really tested out their hair masks, but just from those alone, Hask is working well in my favor. Unfortunately their regular conditioners have silicons, and I just noticed that most everything, including the masks, have some rubbing alcohol. Granted, the latter ingredient mostly falls at the bottom of the list, and it’s easy to slip under the radar when you’re focused on finding stuff that is sulfate and silicone-free. I haven’t really noticed any negative effects since there’s a bunch of other factors on how my hair ends up after in between washes, so I still have my hopes that these masks still work well for me.

It’s hard to resist building up your own stash, especially if there’s something out there you’re dying to try. And every head of hair is different, so you may need a variety to garner at least halfway decent results. That said, here’s some tips to manage your hair care stash!

  1.  Pay attention to what your hair likes. Every head of hair is different and will vary in reactions to certain products, especially if your routine has multiple steps or you’re completely changing it. Some people may need 10 products for good results while others get by with just 5. Is your scalp getting clean? Do your ends soak up product well? Does it dry up or get too oily shortly after washing? It’s a lot to observe, but answering these questions helps to better decide how many products you need for your routine, which brands will actually do the job, and how often you need to restock.
  2.  You don’t need to buy that much shampoo. If you’re like me, chances are you probably only wash your hair once a week, maybe less than that. As such, your shampoo is gonna last you forever. Hell, I still have the same Shea Moisture shampoo I got when I first began a curly hair routine (speaking of, I probably need to double check the expiration date). I suggest keeping at least two kinds of shampoo in stock; one that’s gentle and low-lather and one that’s a little more heavy-duty (but still sulfate free).
    1. The same goes for styling gels. You only use these once a week, and you only need about a silver dollar sized amount to hold your curls, maybe less depending on the brand and how much hair you have. Have at least one gel for a light hold and another for a stronger hold depending on what kind of wash day you’re having.
  3.  You can afford to splurge on conditioners, masks and leave-ins. As curly hair is naturally dry, you need all the moisture you can get, and you will quickly burn through conditioners like your life depends on it. And it never hurts to have a little variety for your kinda good days and the nightmare fuel days once it’s time to wash again. And if a nearby store has those 50% more bottles, freaking go for it.
    1. Travel size masks are also neat to test out certain products before committing to the large jar, which is why I got so into Hair Mask of the Week when I began a curly hair routine.
  4.  If there’s a product you absolutely love and cannot live without, don’t feel bad on having one bottle or container on standby to save a trip to the store. Otherwise, try to empty out at least one or two containers before going on your next shopping spree so you know you’ll have the space.

I’m going to slowly wade through my stash over the next few weeks, so if you see anything above which I should desperately test out and review or if I’m missing something vital in my stash, please leave a comment with your suggestions!

And if you like what I do here, consider buying me a ko-fi. Your support is much appreciated!
